Nobody Knows...
I've never been able to figure out why Clapton's songs are so mopey. I guess he's had some really bad luck when it came to love. It's true that he does sometimes sound a little bitter but I still think there's something that we can relate to. Let's face it, anyone that's had a break-up or had feelings for someone that didn't return them can relate. Perhaps upon reflection I could see why he did have challenges in the relationship department. After all, he did have a drug issue, specifically with heroin. And for many years he was in love with his best friend's wife. How could that not mess you up? Talk about a situation that's messed up. Of course, he mentions whiskey why do dudes love to drown their sorrows in whiskey. I guess if you are in love with your best friend's woman, whiskey probably would be easier to talk to. After all, how would you explain to your friend I'm in love with your woman. Maybe on reflection this song makes sense. And I guess it's not a situation where another woman is gonna make it better. That type of thing probably just makes you long for the other woman more. I've never myself been in the situation where I was with one person, but wanted someone else. You probably would just want the other person more, especially if they are right there in front of your face. But you imagine being in place where you are so down and out there's nobody there. That's got to be a pretty painful place to be. Needless to say, I don't envy him.
